Data Collection For Lower Extremity Intervention Denials
Among key findings of a recent national survey regarding health insurance plan denials are that (1) nearly 15 percent of all claims submitted to private payers for reimbursement are initially denied, including many that were pre-approved to move forward through the prior authorization process, (2) denied claims tended to be more prevalent for higher-cost treatments, (3) over half of denials by private payers were ultimately overturned, and (4) providers spend $19.7 billion a year just to adjudicate with payers.
As it relates to OEIS, we are hearing increasing concerns from OEIS Members regarding health insurance plan denials relating to lower extremity interventions. OEIS is coordinating with the Society for Vascular Surgery and other societies to collect additional information on this disturbing trend to help in our advocacy.
